Take Action—a full week of action. This year’s National Week of Action is June 5-9, 2023. I encourage you—friends, allies, colleagues, strangers—to join together to make a difference. Get more details of current and planned actions, which will be modified, added to, and updated as this week goes by.
This Week’s Actions
Day 1 (and ongoing): Adoptee Citizenship. Ongoing action that you can be done all week and beyond. Does it look bleak for action on U.S. citizenship for all intercountry adoptees? Maybe. But the Equal Citizenship for Children Act (ECCA) is active in Congress with 20 sponsors. It’ll really look bleak if we don’t support this bill. Find out more the ECCA here and take action by contacting your US representative to request support and movement on the bill. I’ve made it super easy. Seriously, a few clicks and you’ll be able to send a brief email and tweet out support for the bill. Plus, you will have done something meaningful. That’s all I’m asking. A little bit of meaningful action.
Day 2: California. The Adoptees United board has an active petition that requests an organization to rescind its support of a bad and discriminatory California bill. Who or what supports a bill that makes it harder for adoptees to get their own original birth certificates? An association of private detectives, known as the California Association of Licensed Investigators, whose members will benefit from the continued secrecy of our own records. On Tuesday, June 6 I’ll be asking you to sign that letter. If you want to jump into that right now, here it is. Thanks!
Day 3: Wisconsin. A section of the Wisconsin State Bar Association opposes a good bill in the state, AB13/SB15. I’ll be asking you to sign a letter asking the state bar to withdraw its opposition.
Day 4: Multiple States. This one’s easy. Multiple coalitions and organizations are doing the ground work to pass bills in various states. I’ll ask that you join those efforts, particularly if you are impacted by legislation in a particular state. Details will be posted on the National Week of Action page and on Twitter.
Day 5: To Be Announced. I have ideas but would love to hear from you. We could celebrate recent victories in South Dakota, Vermont, and Minnesota. Or support ongoing efforts in Georgia, Virginia, Maryland and maybe even the District of Columbia. Or donate toward various good causes. Let me know your ideas in the comments below.
