Tell Iowa Reps: NO on SF621

A once-clean bill in Iowa is now bad. SF621 grants parents an unchallenged power to alter an adopted person’s original birth certificate—for now, for future adoptions, and forever, even after the parent dies.

Update. It appears that the bill may not be considered in the House, and I’ve decided that further emails and contacts to legislators are not necessary, unless the message is solely about inherent flaws in the bill itself, other than redaction (e.g., effective date provisions and who is an “entitled person” to receive the copy of the OBC). We’ve done what we can, and thank you to those who contacted legislators!

The bill has been transmitted to the House, where it faces skeptical Republican leadership and may not even be brought up for consideration. We need to let the Iowa House of Representatives know that this bill does not work and should not be brought up for debate. We particularly need to get that point across to House Republican leadership.

Did I Miss Something?

I work hard to get the laws and facts straight in every state---and to keep them regularly updated. If you see something that's not quite right or doesn't fit your experience, let me know with either a quick comment or an email.

Iowa Advocacy/Caselaw

Iowa Adoptee & Family Coalition is working to change Iowa law. IAFC however, supports birthparent redaction provisions and is behind efforts to add those provisions to current law.

Lawyers (or others) who want to understand how hard it is to obtain identifying information from court adoption records in Iowa should read the relatively recent Iowa Supreme Court case of In Re RD, 876 NW 2d 786 (Iowa 2016).
