I frequently reach out on behalf of adopted people who have temporary crises or financial issues, largely solved by financial assistance that our community provides.
UPDATE. DONE! We raised $505 in exactly 7 hours, 56 minutes. Huge thanks for all of you who contributed. Every time there has been a need, people have come through. I will finish up the legal work to obtain the Replacement Certificate of Citizenship, and we will now have the funds for my client to pay the $505 USCIS filing fee. You all rock! Srsly, you do.
This time it is an adult intercountry adoptee whose adoptive parents will not relinquish her Certificate of Citizenship, resulting in her having to pay for a replacement certificate, which involves a filing fee of $505. Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon experience with many transnational adoptees (and many of my clients).
Given what we’ve been able to do as a community in the past, I’m sure we can take care of this quickly. I represent her pro bono through the Adoptees United Citizenship Clinic, so once we have the fee available I will file the application for a Replacement Certificate on her behalf (I am also contributing the credit card processing fees for any donations made). Any excess funds raised will be placed in my client trust account and reserved for any future financial assistance issues for other intercountry adoptee clients.
Thank you.
Greg
