Background. The Adoptee Citizenship will seek common-sense fixes to U.S. immigration law that will repeal a loophole that has denied U.S. citizenship to thousands of intercountry adoptees who were adopted by U.S. citizen parents decades ago. While many people presume that children adopted by U.S. citizen parents receive automatic U.S. citizenship when they are adopted, this is not true for all intercountry adoptees. Many are now adults and still do not have U.S. citizenship through their adoptive parents.Many are now adults and do not have U.S. citizenship—and some have been deported.

The Adoptee Citizenship Act aims to fix issues that intercountry adoptees struggle with today in trying to secure U.S. citizenship.

Then call or email your representative’s office and indicate that you support fixing US citizenship for intercountry adoptees who lack that citizenship. Explain the reasons why fixing this problem is long overdue and why it is important to you. Finally, ask that the representative support the Adoptee Citizenship Act. Here is a sample message:

I live in [town/city]. I am an [adoptee/birthparent/adoptive parent/ally] and your constituent. I ask that you support the Adoptee Citizenship Act. This bill will provide US citizenship for all intercountry adopted people brought to the United States through adoption. Too many intercountry adoptees today still lack US citizenship because of a loophole in current law. It’s time to fix this loophole. Please let me know that I have your support. Please let me know your position on the Adoptee Citizenship Act.
